10/11 (Sat) Baby’s ring entrance

Minatobashira Shrine Dedication Baby Ring-Entry Event (October)

A cute baby enters the ring wearing a mawashi.

Surrounded by beautiful nature, in Tonoura, Kaiyo Town, Tokushima Prefecture, the annual festival of Minatohashira Shrine, handed down since ancient times, is held the day before the Osato Hachiman Shrine Autumn Festival. A sumo ring is set up in the gymnasium of the former Kaifu Junior High School, and baby boys born within the past year enter the ring. Around their waists, they wear vibrant mawashi (sashes) of yokozuna and sekitori, featuring brave tigers and hawks, embroidered with their own shikona (a play on their own name), and a red and white striped headband is tightly tied around their heads, creating the perfect miniature sumo wrestler. Many of the babies are still unable to walk, so they are held in the arms of the referee for the occasion. Once they step onto the ring, the baby is held high as the referee announces the winner, and prayers are expressed that they will grow up to be as big, strong, and resilient as sumo wrestlers.
